Specific consumer demand and technology are two major trends that

fragrance companies will face during the next 50 years, according to a

panel of experts assembled by The Fragrance Foundation's recent seminar,

"The Future of Fragrance in America in the Next 50 Years, 2000-2050".

Predictions of possible future trends are made such as: Fragrances will

be produced by scientifically altering the plant's structure to create

new aromas. Fragrance companies will have the ability to monitor body

chemistry and olfactory traits on individual people. Aromachology and

Aromatherapy will be different as science advances it. In future

marketing efforts will explain the contents of perfume to consumers. For

the spring and summer of 2000, personal care fragrances for women will be

florals with unique fragrances as green peppers and cucumbers. Men will

tend to use much more glamorous fragrance

There is no doubt that today's consumer wants to be pampered like never

before. Despite the importance of visual appeal, after all is said and

done, it is the scent that sells. Regardless of what claims are made for

any given product, no matter how attractive it may be, or how strong a

value perception it may have, that product will ultimately live or die

by the appeal of the fragrance. It is the most fundamental element in

supporting the product, concludes Tsumura's Wells.

The term Aroma-Chology (a Service Mark of the Olfactory Research Fund)

was coined in 1982 to denote the science that is dedicated to the study

of the interrelationship between psychology and ...fragrance technology

to elicit a variety of specific feelings and emotions--relaxation,

exhilaration, sensuality, happiness and well being-- through odors via

stimulation of olfactory pathways in the brain, especially the limbic

system.  The term Aroma Science has been used by some recent authors in

the same sense in which Aroma-Chology is used here, but the authors

prefer the latter.  The paper reviews research findings over the past

ten years in the areas of measuring the effects of fragrances upon

feelings, moods and emotions, and several related areas of response:

electrical activity in the brain, physiological parameters such as heart

rate and skin conductance, cognitive functions such as memory and

     voluntary and involuntary behavior.

Aromatherapy treatments have an advantage over traditional

stress-management techniques like meditation and gentle exercise by

being able to build up a reserve of energy during the process of

achieving relaxation for individuals without an adequate reserve.

Additionally, the inclusion of touch and fragrance in aromatherapy

humanises the treatment making it more favourable for individuals who

have experienced physical and verbal isolation from the depersonalisati-

Aromatherapy is today, a mixture of ideas and products that generally

refer to the use of essential oils for relaxation and stress.  Aroma is

now becoming more important to aromatherapy.  Research shows that the

odiferous molecule is more likely to be beneficial by inhalation than

massage.  The metabolic pathways are not clearly defined but the action

is noted.  The trend will therefore be more powerful on individual oils.

Does the winter weather get you down? Everybody tends to get a bit

gloomy when the days are short and the weather is cold and grey. But for

some people, the winter blues have a more serious and debilitating edge.

As the nights draw in, people with seasonal affective disorder, or SAD,

begin to feel depressed and sluggish, their thoughts clouded and slow.

Their appetite for sex plummets, replaced by a craving for sweets, bread

and other carbohydrates. SAD people go to bed early, rise late, and even

begin to put on weight, rather like bears getting ready to hibernate.

Not getting enough daylight and sunshine seems to be a major factor

underlying seasonal depression, but beyond that its cause is still a

mystery. Postolache, a practising psychiatrist in Washington DC who

works with many SAD patients, has some intriguing new evidence that

odours play a role in seasonal depression. According to his studies,

people with SAD have a more acute sense of smell than people who do not

suffer from seasonal depression. This opens up the possibility that the

scent of the seasons--as well as the length of day--plays a role in

seasonal mood shifts, and raises hopes that adding stimulating odours to

light treatment will give people with seasonal depression a higher, more

lasting lift--a kind of aromatherapy for the winter blues.

High pressure stress was found to induce immunosuppression accompanied

with the enhancement of motor activity in mice. Citrus fragrance

restored stress-induced immunosuppression and induced calm behavior in

mice. In the forced swimming test using rats, citrus fragrance reduced

the total immobility time and potentiated the imipramine-induced

reduction in total immobility time. The application of citrus fragrance

to depressive patients made it possible to markedly reduce the doses of

antidepressants needed for the treatment of patients.
